But the published project ends up on store shelves in more than a dozen countries, and therefore the question of localization arises. In Russia, several companies are doing this at once, but do they manage to preserve the atmosphere and convey all the richness of the dialogues with characteristic expressions that are most suitable for the actions of the game, which was inherent in the original?? Let’s weigh the pros and cons to come to a conclusion about how well games are translated into our language.

Of course, a game translated into Russian will be in greater demand than the original. After all, the consumer in our country is such that it is better to grasp the essence of what is happening than to enjoy the perfectly chosen voice and performance of a foreign actor. Our localizers try, and sometimes the result is a sound that is not inferior to the original, as for example in the recent Far Cry 3. Translation can also be used by people whose knowledge of English is sufficient for the game, but the decision must be made in a matter of seconds. After all, it is much more convenient to immediately figure out how to turn the tide of events than to make a serious mistake without having time to translate. It is for this reason that most players used the amateur translation of the game The Walking Dead, where the authors did not hesitate to translate the most tense moments colorfully and without censorship. In my opinion, one of the advantages is the rich vocabulary of the Russian language, which is why a high-quality translation can also be supplemented with beautiful epithets and metaphors, and the speech of the main character or villain becomes more diverse and atmospheric. I would also like to note the main feature present in a large number of projects. This is a famous Russian swear word. In many games it is absent, or completely absurdly veiled. But where the heroes are not constrained, the atmosphere is also complemented, if, of course, obscene speech is appropriate. In general, each translation has individual details that were a great success, but there are also unpleasant aspects, which are discussed below.

These include incorrectly selected actors, whose voice goes against what is happening, and poor translation of the script, which makes the game simply incomprehensible, and incorrect interpretation of some plot details, which also has a detrimental effect on the impression of the game. Russian translations for the most part turn out to be of rather average quality, which suggests that it would be good to improve your knowledge of foreign languages and calmly play in the original. There seems to be nothing more to add, except perhaps it’s worth mentioning the obvious “shortage” of professional actors ready to voice the game, and those that exist undoubtedly delight with every appearance, forcing the player to experience strong emotions, comparable only to watching a good film. The offices that offered their translation and their actors only amused us, and such titles as Incredibly Bad or Tony Crutoni’s Mad Pumpkin (I’m not kidding, there is this disc on the shelf next to me, among Max Payne 3, Diablo 3, Battlefield 3 and others) will be imprinted in the memory of experienced players for a long time.

Well, if you look at how translations were made in the past, assessing their quality, and at what translations are provided to us now, we can say that everything is going in the right direction. For example, I had no complaints about the new Hitman or amazing Dishonored. Even Assassin’s creed 3 can be praised, because hard work was done to localize all the heroes of such a big story. In general, I can only say that there is potential, and therefore very soon we will listen to even better quality speech, and colorful Russian expressions will brighten up even the most “Western” game.
